In the early 1980s, a dedicated group of local residents recognized a growing need for dedicated senior services in the Barrington area. Led by Peg Cullen, the group sought to conduct a comprehensive community assessment and approached the Barrington Area Development Council (BADC) for foundational support.

Recognizing the importance of the initiative, BADC financed a professional study that confirmed a strong demand for local senior programming. To help launch the initiative, BADC also extended its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status to the fledgling group until it was officially incorporated as an independent non-profit organization in 1985 – Barrington Area Council on Aging (Bacoa). Now celebrating over 40 years of service, BACOA has established itself as the region's premier organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing the lives of local seniors.
