Ride for 3 Reasons

When the concept for Ride for 3 Reasons was first envisioned in 2000, its founder possessed limited fundraising experience and few initial community connections. A pivotal turning point occurred when the founder sought counsel from Barrington Area Development Council (BADC) board member Norval Stevens, who advised engaging BADC directly for structural support.

Welcoming the initiative, BADC provided immediate institutional endorsement, extended its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and leveraged its network to market the event across the region. This foundational fiscal sponsorship and advocacy proved instrumental to the campaign’s early success.

While originally conceptualized as a singular event, the initiative rapidly expanded beyond expectations due to its profound community impact. A second campaign followed in 2007, and a third in 2012 covered more than 12,000 miles around the perimeter of the United States. In 2016, a fourth cross-country journey was spearheaded by Barrington High School senior Jan Gierlach. Sustained throughout by BADC’s non-profit status, the four collective campaigns raised more than $1.6 million to advance cancer research, ALS research, and hospice public awareness.
