In 2008, the Barrington Area Development Council (BADC) – in partnership with the Barrington 220 Educational Foundation and the Barrington Junior Women’s Club – provided foundational assistance to a dedicated group of local parents. 

United by a shared vision to support families of children with special needs, this collaborative effort led to the formal establishment of Barrington Area Special Voices (BASV) as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The organization’s vital mission is to deliver comprehensive advocacy, educational programming, and social growth opportunities to children with special needs and their families throughout the Barrington area.

To fulfill this mission, BASV established a dedicated scholarship fund providing critical financial assistance to offset costs for therapeutic and medical interventions, including speech, occupational, and physical therapies, as well as professional counseling services. Beyond clinical financial support, the organization fosters community integration by hosting an array of accessible, low-cost, or complimentary social events. These specialized activities include adapted gymnastics, therapeutic horseback riding, swimming events, and inclusive holiday traditions—such as an allergen-free Halloween trick-or-treat event and an evening with Santa.

Recognizing the value of peer support, BASV also serves as an essential resource hub. The organization provides families with comprehensive IEP navigation templates, compiled medical resource guides—including curated reading lists, local support networks, and vetted area therapists and physicians—and vital networking forums where families can connect and share insights on navigating similar life challenges.
